“Christian” vs. “Christ follower” January 18, 2008

Posted by Zack in , trackback

“Christian” is to “Christ follower” as “Liberal” is to “Progressive.” It’s not quite that simple, but here’s a Mac ad parody that shows the way many Christian Revolutionaries are using labels to mark the change taking place in their lives, communities and theology.

This video highlights the way much of US Christianity has become defined by superficial symbols and even religious consumer items, purchased from the “Christian Industrial Complex.” There are several move parodies like this to watch if you click over to GodTube.

This video is on GodTube, which I’ve blogged about before.

These videos are pretty creative

Most of my friends identify as being some variation of “Christ-follower”, it’s a good way to get people thinking and talking about Jesus in a new context for a new generation of disciples. I credit Lifechurch (lifechurch.tv) for that, at least in my experience.

On one hand, I like how they show we don’t have to constantly “advertise” our faith by slapping bumper stickers on our cars, wearing WWJD wristbands, or wearing suits. A lot of people focus too much on the external crap, rather than showing Christ’s love through actions.

But the videos also tend to stereotype quite a bit. The Christian is the square, and the Follower of Christ is the cooler-than-thou hipster. I know many young Christians, myslef included, try to distance themselves from worship cliches to find an authentic experience with God. But by doing so, we often come just as self-rigtheous as the Christians we’re trying to stay away from!

That’s pretty funny. Who doesn’t want to be the mac guy, I mean “Christ-Follower.”

Oh, Wess, you’re so un-PC! :)

I loved the line in the first video in the series:

PC guy: “Do you really think Jesus would worship on a Saturday?”
Mac guy: “Actually, yeah, he… uh… never mind.”

Thanks for the link!
