Is Huckabee the choice of Christian revolutionaries? January 13, 2008

picture-4.pngThere’s an interesting article in the NYTimes today about young evangelicals supporting Huckabee against the hesitations of many of the leaders of their parents’ generation. But are the Revolutionaries into Huck? My anecdotal evidence suggests that the revolutionaries are split between Huckabee, Obama and giving up on politics altogether.

The article tells about a grassroots online campaign worth checking out called Huck’s Army. It was started by two 19 year old Christian activists. Unfortunately for Huckabee, these kinds of online organizations have not yet found a way to actually move enough votes to make the difference on February 5, or “Tsunami Tuesday.”

Your anecdotal evidence is right on track with my personal experience from the circles I know well. I personally believe that if neither Huckabee or Obama become the next commander and chief that the numbers will spike incredibly high into the category of giving up on politics altogether. I pray this does not happen, and believe the work you are doing will help the political world to work towards reaching out to the young revolutionaries…..

In my experience, I’m seeing a substantially higher number of people among my ‘revolutionary’ circle going for Ron Paul than any of other candidates. Almost none for Huckabee, and Obama a distant second. Of course this is a group that primarily defines Sojourners as legalistic, so they may not be representative of the Christian revolutionary crowd.

I’m a Christian and I have never, ever, in my life even given any positive mental space to a Republican candidate, much less considered voting for one. My concern for the poor, for peace, for working people, etc has always trumped my reservations about some of the cultural aspects of the Democratic agenda. However, Huckabee really interests me (altho I also have significant reservations about him as well). Quotes like “If I really know what it means to follow Jesus, it means no kid goes hungry tonight. It means no wife gets the daylights beat out of her by some alcoholic abusive husband. It means no kid lives in a neighborhood where he is scared to death of some child predator that is going to pick him up and carry him off. It means not one single elderly person has to make the choice between food or medicine.” (And his brilliant skill in debate and ability to laugh at himself.)

Those quotes (above, from Beth) from Huckabee interest me also, but then what about this talk that he’s going to amend the Constitution to reflect God’s interests? That scares me. I’m a Christian, but I also happen to believe in the separation between church and state…

Yeah, B, that new Constitution comment scared me as well.
